Phonics is the study of the relationship between letters of the alphabet and their corresponding sounds. It is an essential component of early literacy programs that teach the skills necessary to learn to read and write. Instruction in phonics begins in Kindergarten, when children learn to recognize letters by name and sound and is often accompanied by interactive phonics games that make learning more enjoyable.

Types

There are many ways to teach phonics with games. The most prevalent is the use of computer software or online phonics games, where each child works at his own pace to identify sounds and letters. These games should be attractive with bright colours and animation to hold the interest of the child while he learns phonics.

Other types of games include:

–          flash cards

–           phonics bingo

–           a variety of board games that require letter and sound identification in order to proceed around the board and win the game.

Function

Practicing phonics with games creates a positive attitude towards what may be challenging skill for some children. The interaction between the child and teacher immediate feedback and correction, keeping the child from repeatedly committing the same errors and learning the skills incorrectly.

Benefits

Early instruction in phonics builds a strong foundation for children and they show greater success in reading and writing as they progress to higher grades. Instruction that relies at least in part of game play engages children in the learning process and reinforces basic skills. Games often incorporate a visual component which makes it easier for most children to recall the information in the future.

Effects

A strong literacy background is important to all areas of academics and is vital to success in school and later in career choices. Phonics education greatly improves the quality of reading and writing programs and fosters the development of advanced skills once the basics are mastered. Teaching those basic skills via game play is one step in educating confident and competent readers and writers.
